Why Waterproofing Your Horse Rug Matters

A horse rug that's lost its waterproofing doesn't just leave your horse wet and uncomfortable — it also becomes heavy, cold, and far less effective at regulating temperature. Over time, a saturated rug can cause skin conditions and chills, particularly during the wet British winter. The good news is that re-proofing a horse rug at home is straightforward, affordable, and takes less than an hour.

How to Tell When Your Horse Rug Needs Re-Proofing

A fresh waterproof coating causes water to bead up and roll off the surface of the rug. When the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish wears down, water starts to soak into the outer fabric rather than beading off. You'll notice the rug feels heavier when wet, or that it takes much longer to dry. If water is soaking in rather than rolling off, it's time to re-proof.

As a general rule, most horse rugs benefit from re-proofing once or twice a season, depending on how hard they're worked and how often they're washed.

Step-by-Step: How to Waterproof a Horse Rug

Step 1 — Wash the Rug First

Always apply waterproofing to a clean rug. Dirt, grease and stable debris will prevent the spray from bonding properly with the fabric. Wash the rug according to the manufacturer's instructions, then allow it to dry completely — as this can help the product penetrate the fibres more effectively.

Step 2 — Lay the Rug Flat or hang it up 

Lay the rug on a clean surface or hang it over a fence or gate so you can access the entire outer surface easily. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated space.

Step 3 — Apply Rug Shield Waterproofing Spray

Hold the Rug Shield Waterproofing Spray approximately 15–20 cm from the surface and apply an even, sweeping coat across the entire outer fabric. Pay particular attention to seams, shoulders, and the back — areas that take the most rain and wear. Don't forget the neck cover if your rug has one.

Step 4 — Allow to Dry

Leave the rug to dry naturally in a warm, airy spot. For best results, leave to dry for 24 hours to allow Rug Shield to fully cure onto the fibres  

Step 5 — Test the Waterproofing

Once dry, sprinkle a little water onto the surface. You should see it bead up and roll off cleanly. If it soaks in, apply a second coat and allow to dry again.

Tips for Long-Lasting Waterproofing

• Re-proof after every wash — washing strips the DWR finish, so always re-apply after cleaning.
• Store rugs clean and dry — storing a damp rug encourages mildew and degrades the waterproofing faster.
• Check seams regularly — seams are the first place waterproofing fails; give them an extra spray when re-proofing.
